Justin Whalley of Smithtown, a junior at St. Anthony's High School is seen presenting a check to Bob Policastro, the executive director of Angela's house.Justin has helped Angela's House for many years, even during a brief time away from his Long Island home.His initial contributions include doing yard work, planting flowers and helping with mass mailings.During the past three years, since his return to Long Island he has continued his fund raising efforts.To date Justin has raised $ 7,000.00 for Angela's House. His most recent fundraiser , a spring flower sale, was a huge success. Justin prepared flyers, did outreach , ordered and delivered the plants.In addition, he previously raised money by organizing a clothing drive and a book collection. Bob Policastro stated that "Justin is a rare young man who is willing to give of his time and act independently to help others".He understands his donation will help people in the community to care for children with special health care needs, even when insurance coverage is not an option.He knows how to make a difference that will contribute to essential care of the children at Angela's House.

Honoree Pat Norton, Pat has lived in the Hauppauge/Smithtown area for 20 years and runs his many businesses right in the Hauppauge business park, which allows him to contribute to this community. He has coached many times for intramural sports as well as be a part of countless fundraisers to help our schools. He currently lives in Smithtown with his wife Laurie and his four children.
Being friends with Bob and Angie Policastro through his children and sports, he learned of Angela’s House. He didn’t hesitate to support and donate. When Pat started Active Web Group, having 15 years of marketing experience, he had the idea to create a website for Angela’s House, www.AngelasHouse.org. He thought it would be the perfect communication tool to help improve the online outreach. Pat couldn’t be more pleased with the results and continues to work with Bob to make the website the best it can be.

We welcome you to join us for the Candle Light Vigil with the Angel of Hope Statue

We will have a candlelight memorial service for parents who have lost a child, of any age, for any reason. This annual memorial service is an opportunity for parents and friends to gather to remember these children who have left our lives too soon. Program scheduled rain or shine.
This candlelight healing ceremony will be held at the base of the Angel monument each year on the first Saturday of December. After a few remarks, a moment of silence, the attendees are invited to leave a white flower at the base of the angel statue. The public is welcome.

Candles and flowers will be supplied to the first 200 people
Directions: Once in the park follow signs to the Veterans Memorial. Please park in field 6 to the end of the lot (north) close to the Harry Chapin lakeside Theatre. The Angel of Hope Statue will be close to the Veterans memorials

Welcome To The Christmasville House! We’re the Buckley’s (Dan, Debi, Chris, Steph & Danielle.) We’ve been decorating for over ten years. It all started back at our apartment in Queens with lights around the kitchen and living room windows and lights down the railing on the stoop. In 2000, we moved into Farmingville and now have two dedicated sheds to store our brand new Christmas display. Chris usually starts decorating in the middle of October to have it all ready for Thanksgiving night. It takes him 4-6 hours a day during the week and all of the weekends to plan, setup and wire all of the decorations. During the holiday season we collect donations for Angela’s House and last year we raised more than $1,800.00 and would like to thank all of Long Island for all of your support. Chris is responsible for everything. He has such dedication and that holiday spirit to do all of this. He says “Seeing a kid’s face light up with excitement and joy is such a phenomenal feeling”. Our Christmas display is on everyday between 5:00-11:00pm from Thanksgiving night to the first Saturday after New Years.

On December 13th, Santa will be making an early stop at the Christmasville house where he’ll be outside taking pictures with all the visitors, giving out candy canes and serving fresh hot cocoa. Our favorite decorations of 2008 are the brand new computer controlled Christmas mega-tree and the New Years Time Square Building. Chris started the mega-tree project back in January ordering all the parts and soldering them all himself and taking almost two full years to complete his one-of-a-kind Times Square building it features a built in flat screen monitor showing all the classic Christmas movies. Our neighbors think we’re crazy but love that we have the holiday spirit and enjoy it very much. Chris is inspired by all of the people that come by to see the house. He says “When people shout from their cars or even take the time to get out their cars on a cold night just to see the display is such a great feeling of accomplishment”. Having his little sister as his helper, anytime she gets excited seeing a brand new decoration, Chris knows its perfect to add to the collection. We hope you’ll come and stop by this holiday season meet and take pictures with Santa and drop off a donation. We greatly appreciate everyone who’s made a difference this year and last year and wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday.

Cars for a Cure

The Hauppauge Middle School students and staff setup a day of fun for a cause.
They called it "Cars for a Cure" with proceeds going to Angela's House. There was all kinds of activities to keep everyone happy. The parking lot was full of classic cars for people to see. The field had some fun games and activities for the kids and inside was a vendor fair. The kids from the school had a great time helping with this exciting event. The event was held in honor
of the Cashin family from the local community who lost their son this past summer.

it was a great moment when the honorees Pat Cassetta and Angelo Ciotta were presented with a plague thanking them for helping to bring the Angel to long Island. PAT CASSETTA
Pat came to the United States in 1939 from Rome, Italy. He joined the Marine Corp at age 16 and served from 1944 to 1947 in the Pacific and fought in the Battles of Okinawa and Saipan. He has served as President and has held various other offices in the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and the 1st Marine Division Assn., NY Chapter. He works diligently on veterans’ issues to ensure that those who have fought to preserve our freedom are not forgotten. Pat also maintains a close relationship with the active Marines, assisting them with housing and education and helps familiarize them with the area to make their transition here easier. Pat also visits elementary schools and teaches the children the importance of honoring the flag and our country and to appreciate the freedom they enjoy.

Since 2003 both Pat and Angelo have helped with the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial Foundation. They worked tirelessly for more than 4 years, until its completion, overseeing the construction site in Eisenhower Park, assisting the volunteer construction workers and working with architects and local government officials.

Angel of Hope Statue
In 2007 Bob Policastro the founder and Executive Director of Angela's House met Pat Cassetta by chance. From that day Pat , Angelo and Bob worked on bringing the Angel of Hope statue to Eisenhower Park to honor all parents that have lost a child. On December 7th 2008 we had a breath taking opening ceremony along with a candle light vigil. This project would not be possible without the help and devotion of Pat Cassetta and Angelo Ciotta.

Angela's House Name Change

What is in a new name? Our new identity into the future. We have taking out Association for Technology Dependent Children (ATDC) from our name.

We felt it would be important to explain how we came to this decision. The term "Technology Dependent Children" was created over 20 years ago to medically describe and categorize children with special health care needs. This term was meant to simplify the difficult overall description of the hundreds and thousands of rare diseases, illness and accident-related medical conditions. At the time it was easier to use this term to help describe the children.
When we first chose to use this term for the name of our non-profit agency, we felt it would become well recognized in the community. Unfortunately, the use of this term was reduced by both our federal and state governments. By the time our first Angela´s House opened in 2000, we saw how well received it was and we also saw that people in the community knew us more from Angela´s House than from ATDC. We decided at that point to use both names to describe ATDC for our home care services and Angela´s House for our home-away-from-home alternative for children. Over the past seven years, the term "Technology Dependent Children" was not used and Angela´s House became more familiar to people.

The decision was made to change our name to Angela´s House. All of our services will remain the same. We will continue to support parents caring for their children at home and we will continue to offer out-of-home alternatives for children that can no longer live with their parents. We understand that we are still faced with the enormity of trying to explain to our community which children we work with. Our best description is to say we work with children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill or living with a life threatening illness.

High School Students help Angela's House

Book-in-a-Day is a high school literacy program that encourages engaged reading and writing through student-run book publication. This year two books were written by students "Purple Converse" and "Secrets Are Spoiled by People who Whisper Too Loud". Some of the proceeds of the sale of the book will go to Angela's House.

why is she treated differently? It's so wrong.

I see a little girl who is judged by the rest of
society. I walk the halls of my school and hear the
comments made about people 'like her." I walk
the streets and see those who are different sitting in
their own world, all alone. They are discriminated
against. they are seen like the hunchback of Notre
Dame and expected to stay hidden in their towers.
others think they're dull and dim, but people like
this young girl are far from that. Is it really that
horrible to be unlike everyone else, to take the cards
life dealt you and play them your own way? No.

I see a little girl who takes on the world like a brave
warrior. She keeps confidence and courage close to
her heart. She is unique. She is special. She's a clever
fox who never runs out of ideas. She's imaginative
and full of happiness. She is too young to see how
some people treat her. innocence and ignorance
aren't so bad sometimes. She's my family's precious
angel: we have to protect her. I see a girl who has
Down Syndrome, and she means the world to me.

Christmasville on Long Island

The Christmasville House!
Chris Buckley usually starts decorating in the middle of October to have it all ready for Thanksgiving night. It takes him 4-6 hours a day during the week and all of the weekends to plan, setup and wire all of the decorations. During the holiday season we collect donations for Angela’s House and last year we raised more than $1,800.00 and would like to thank all of Long Island for all of your support. Chris is responsible for everything. He has such dedication and that holiday spirit to do all of this. He says “Seeing a kid’s face light up with excitement and joy is such a phenomenal feeling”. Our Christmas display is on everyday between 5:00-11:00pm from Thanksgiving night to the first Saturday after New Years.

On December 13th, Santa made an early stop at the Christmasville house. Visitors took photos with Santa.
The new favorite decorations of 2008 is the brand new computer controlled Christmas mega-tree and the New Years Time Square Building.

Nick wanted to help at Angela's House. He was told there was some work that needed to be done around the house. Nick happily said he would love to help. He spent hours helping at the house. He did work that usually would take a group of peolpe to do. All by himself , he moved wood chips from the side of the house and mocved them to the back to the playground area. Bob Policastro the executive director said he was perfect volunteer. He was extremely responsible and very very hard working. Nick is a great example of a good young man. Bob could not believe he moved the pile of wood chips all by himself. What a great kid. The renovations to the playground area is now all complete.

It was an amazing day at the Hauppauge Middle School on Saturday November 1st. They did a fundraiser called "Cars for a Cure".
The faculty, students and community did a great job with this exciting event. The guiding force behind this was the principal Mrs Maryann Fletcher and the main coordinator of the event the Assistant principle Mrs Joy Ferrara. This effort was born out of the Middle School desire to help honor the many local children in their community that are afflicted with diseases and illnesses. The feeling that we are trying to create is the community is behind there kids. The children and their parents should not feel alone. The community is thinking about them. This event raised awareness and money to support research so that one day we may find cures for these childhood diseases. During the months of October and November many people have come together to show we can all make a difference.

The Middle school event has been a great kick off to the many efforts the teachers and students have done through out the Hauppauge district to help show support to their children and their parents . The Elementary Schools have been doing fund raisers and making baskets. The teachers have been doing multiple creative things including jeans days to raise money and awareness. Many thanks to the Hauppauge school district, teachers, students and community for all their support. The many families in their district that have children with different diseases and illnesses really appreciate all they have done.

On November 13th Angela's House will be hosting a fund raiser to raise money and awareness for childhood diseases and illnesses. The event is called " A Night for A Cure" which will be held at Oheka Castle. This event honors all the children and families throughout Long Island and the Metro area. 100 percent of the money raised will go to support research to support all of our children.

THIS ANGEL WAS INSPIRED BY THE BOOK "THE CHRISTMAS BOX" WHERE A WOMAN MOURNS THE LOSS OF HER CHILD AT THE BASE OF THE ANGEL STATUE. THE ORIGINAL STATUE WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE AUTHOR RICHARD PAUL EVANS IN RESPONSE TO REPORTS THAT GRIEVING PARENTS WERE SEEKING OUT THE ANGEL AS A PLACE TO GRIEVE AND HEAL. THIS SIMPLE, NON-RELIGIOUS BUT SPIRITUAL STORY HAS BROUGHT HOPE TO THOUSANDS OF PARENTS WHO HAVE ENDURED THE DEATH OF A CHILD.

Jay and Billy started the day early at 6am. They crossed the George Washington Bridge and met with the NYC police that assisted then through the city. Once they got to Long Island the Nassau County Police took over. The Suffolk's Sheriff Department drove with them to the finish line. The Centerreach Fire Department setup the ladders with a beautiful large American flag that greeted Billy and Jay with pride as they came home.
