Dear Friends and Family,
After eleven years of being a member of the Boy Scouts of America, I have met all of the requirements to begin working on my Eagle Scout project. The project that I plan to do will benefit Angela’s House on Brooksite Drive in Smithtown.
Angela’s House is a home for medically frail children who require 24-hour-a-day nursing care. The first Angela's House was named after Angela Policastro who died when she was fourteen months old. Her parents, Bob and Angie, began a campaign after her death to develop a home on Long Island for severely disabled children. The Policastros hoped to spare other families from their ordeal of searching out-of-state for a place that would take care of their child.
In order to make Angela’s House in Smithtown totally wheelchair accessible, the original sloping backyard had to be built up with tons of dirt to make it level with the house. Mr. Policastro had retaining walls built around three beautiful full-grown trees so that when the yard was filled and leveled, the bases of the trees were not buried. This saved the trees, but posed a new problem for Mr. Policastro.
Presently, the backyard has a large deep hole around each tree in which someone could fall. This dangerous situation worries Mr. Policastro because the siblings of the residents of Angela’s House play in the backyard. In addition, the largest of the tree wells is located directly between the house and the area that contains the laundry drop and the garbage pick up station. Even though this area is lit, Mr. Policastro is concerned that someone might accidentally fall into this tree well.
Mr. Policastro informed me that Angela’s House needed something done immediately to prevent people from falling into the tree wells. He was thrilled when I transformed his goal into an Eagle Scout project. He and I decided that I would erect a three foot high vinyl fence around each tree well and landscape in front of each fence. This way, no one will be able to fall into the tree wells, and they will be beautified with flower beds containing perennials and annuals.
The supplies that I need are:
17 sections of eight foot long white vinyl fence $50.00each
33 fence posts $25.00each
33 sets of brackets
$1.00each
1 - 5lb box of exterior screws to attach fence and brackets to posts $25.00
3 flats of annual flowers $15.00 each
3 flats of perennials $15.00 each
6 dwarf bushes
$30.00 each
5 yards of woodchips
$30.00 per yard
3 post hole diggers
$35.00 each
1 - 80lb bag of cement
$5.00
6 pizzas for the Boy Scouts who provide the labor $12.00 each
6 bottles of soda $1.00 each
Paper goods (plates, cups, napkins)$15.00
My project will benefit the Smithtown community and will enable me to achieve my lifelong goal to become an Eagle Scout. Your donation would greatly be appreciated.
